minimalist goes rustic

Email |
|
By houseofanais · October 23, 2012 · 4 Comments ·

This is sort of a surprise, but our house has gotten a new piece and it is far away from the normal minimalist and modern pieces I so yearn. I would say this is the complete opposite: rustic, quirky - and very detailed, should I add. I am not sure what happened, but this old wheel of a wooden cart turned into glass coffee table somehow was calling my name - and half an hour later it was already at home.

The table has three main parts - the round glass top, the wooden wheel part and a heavy metal frame. It also has lights inside the natural weave fabric, which makes it look like some kind of alien ship in the pictures when lit in the dark....Very cool and interesting indeed (and heavy). Now I wonder what the husband is going to think about the table - and what do you think it?

And since the living room is still empty the next question would be what kind of seating to fit with this table? Oh, so many questions!

Rustic is the word

I got some doubts when the table got home, but I still think it's going to look fab once there is something else in the room to besides the rugs and the temporary bean bags...

Here's the perfect little dream castle in Brittany, northern France. It looks great, is compact in size (400+m2/4500 sq ft) so the running costs aren't astronomical either. It's time for some real castle fancy, as the cute grounds also include a swimming pool, old statues and nice flower beds!

modern twist on traditional style

How lovely is this this renovation project in the hills of Beijing - a classic home with a modern spirit, lots of traditional shapes and art all tastefully mixed together. A harmonious colour palette, lots of textures of wood and shades of white. Such a delight with airy rooms and open space and with the light flowing from one room to another!

I was feeling a bit Kardashian today with my kounty kitchen find while naming my post... Anyway, this room is so cute with traditional red and white checkered curtains, baby clue cabinets, that amazing red AGA - or I think it's AGA but I can't quite read the label. The whole room is just filled cute stuff, like all those coffee presses is various sizes.

I should also mention that I like the checkered rug and the sweet red coffee pot set (it's just like my cute little teapot, but I am missing the matching cups though). Oh, and aren't the pink accessories here are there just so adorable too - at least I think so, but lots of males might disagree and think that there is just too much sweetness and pastels in this room... I just think that it's the perfect country kitchen!

chic country living mixed with hollywood glamour

This house is very beautiful - I like especially the rooms with soft grey combined with black and white - they have a feel of sophisticated Hollywood glamour. And then comes to cute country kitchen and those very masculine blue-based bedrooms.

The high-celinged living room reminds me of Restoration Hardware style, and I like the bit more eclectic figurines on the wall in the more red-toned sitting room. Everything is so coordinated and yet cozy, yet there are some style variations in the house - nice little surprises. The house itself is also impressive and comes with lots of lush landscaping around. A beautiful setting all-in-all.

traditional in a modern way

Somebody please find a house like this for us to rent (and furnished too with this sort of cool style). I am pretty sure something similar can be found on the market here, but sadly not in the area where we are looking for and now with the budget we got in hand.

So it's time to dream again, and this is just the right house for it - a traditional style but with a very modern flair, filled with light and with lots of height and open space. Just beautiful!

   Living room

This lamp is really nice, it looks like some sort of upside-down vegetable

Traditional yet modern

I see them in a real house (see my post yesterday), Zen-looking stone pillows. Looks great!

Traditional yet modern

Great barstools and the island has a fun detail on the base

Traditional yet modern

So soft and sweet, very girly without being pink. Definitely need to write down this colout and propose it to our future landlord!

Traditional yet modern

Such a classic scene, but the design is quite modern

Traditional yet modern

This bathroom is very natural and Zen. Like it!

Traditional yet modern

A scee I love. Huge blackboard wall for the kids and Aarnio puppys. Colour and cuteness!

Traditional yet modern

I've seen this life-size horse-lamp in a store. Someone actually has it in their home. Very bold, and you need a big space to house this. Bet this is not easily moved around though...

Traditional yet modern

Oh wow. Beautiful design. My favourite space in this house

Very impressive entrance. Dark wood always looks good

traditional palazzo in modern setting

Now I don't know what to think. This is a beautifully restored palazzo and the decor in most rooms is just classic mid-century modern pieces - and exactly what I love:Barcelona chair, Eames, Arco lamp, you name it... This home is like a catalogue come live!

But all of this put together - I have hard time deciding whether these apartments became a hit or a miss. Any opinions out there? Would you like to live in a traditional palazzo decorated in a modern style, or is it just plain wrong to mix detailed frescos with simple modern furniture...?

The dream time is on again. This time it is a classic hunting lodge with a home spa and sauna, and nearly 1500 lush acres (600 hectares) surrounding the impressive home. What a beautiful renovation this is, true to the classic style with light colours, with an interior that has a bit more modern twist to it.

Note also the lovely walk-in closet with a fab chandelier and a classic pair of comfy looking padded armchairs. I also like the purple accent chairs in the living room, a fresh addition to the neutral colour scheme. Everything is just so lovely here!

This historic home from 1916 in New Jersey has certainly some grandeur and poise, and that glamour of times gone by. Peach walls, glitter of gilded mirrors and ceiling frescos, all in a breathtaking environment.

A bit old-fashioned for me, but I wonder what the next owner plans to do with the house as it is going for auction in less than two weeks. A family home, small luxury hotel, or something else? Still classic in style or will it get a modern face-lift? I would love to be a fly on the wall and see what future brings for this house!

Delectable blue and white. Summer colours of deep blue sky and little white clouds. So country chic and fresh. I have always loved this Ikea daybed and it just looks fab teamed with Ralph Lauren accessories and rustic little pieces. There is a hint of romance and yesteryears.

Yes, I think I am looking back to my grandfather's house where there was a daybed too. It changes colours over the years but I remember it best as being orange or turquoise. Hard to sit on as it had no cushions, but still great to sleep on at nights when it was set up... Oh those memories this sweet picture is bringing back!

This absolutely adorable house in black, white, bold patterns - and a hint of softer blue is the creation of Australia-based designer Greg Natale. It's a collection on mid-century pieces, very Moorish patterns, so-fashionable black chandeliers , yet the colour-scheme has not taken the warmth away from the house.

The kitchen with black patterned doors still remains light and airy, and this definitely feels like a well-designed, fashionable home where kids can also live and play. J'adore!

Designers from Martensen Jones have created this delectable bedroom filled with turquoise accents and some more eclectic accessories. It's fun and vibrant, and so not boring! I spy a cool Hermes blanket, truly furry pillows, Indian lanterns, , a Moroccan pouf, an Eiffel tower...maybe this room tells a story of the owner's travels and favourite locations?

How cute is this Scottish town-home! High ceilings, impressive staircase, some original tiling on the floors and the most amazing crown moldings and high skirting. And the kitchen of that cute cream-coloured shaker style with back marble tops.

Everything is just so soft in pastels and delectable; the only thing I would change is the carpets, as I am no fan of them - and they just don't go together with asthma in the family...

hogan's mock-tudor fail in florida finally sells

Now I am a true confessed fan of old English houses, bar one style - the Tudor one. This is because they tend to have just too many beams and low ceilings, and I more of a fan of light and high ceilings. If there is something that I like even less, it is the mock-Tudor houses - I mean if you are going to build new, why typically choose to do low ceilings and darkness in your new house? I normally associate Tudor with cozy because of those attributes...

I remember seeing this gigantic house of 17000+ sq ft owned by Hulk Hogan in Florida in the family's TV show and I was thinking that if you are going to build a mock-Tudor, you need to choose at least a suitable climate for it; it just does not look right surrounded by palm trees and part-tropical weather! But also, unlike the cozy, real Tudor house this actually is plagued by grandness, which makes it look like one of the bedrooms is located in a gigantic hallway. Sweet dreams in the hall- I think not...

Maybe that is the reason Hogan had to drop the astonishing asking price of $25 M to a  mere $6.2M? It just does not feel like the right house for the location...And surprisingly, celebrities seem to often make huge losses with their frequent house-dealings, one would think that their money could buy some good advice too...

So any other opinions on this house: oversized mock-Tudor, is it too big and also too wrong for Florida weather, or not???

The Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca (aka Majorca) might better be known for it's party reputation and beaches, but the island has lots of amazing houses surrounded by rugged terrain - and some great sea views.

Such as this jewel here. It is absolutely fabulous! Love the clever use of space, especially in those rooms with lower, slanted ceilings...Old houses look beautiful, especially when they have been well renovated. Take for example the German custom-made kitchen in this house: certainly modern, but the great walnut-like colour fits so well with the exposed beams, stone walls and natural colours of the decor.

Feeling again some serious house love for the rustic and well renovated stone homes in exotic and warm locations!

Today's sunshine got me feeling very beachy again and I visited (online of course) the beautiful island of St. Martin. I just could not resist sharing this amazing beach villa, the views are unbeatable and the house itself isn't too shabby. I would prefer a bit more casual and marine-themed decor, but colonial certainly works also in the grandly proportioned rooms.

Now if only I had some croissants and freshly squeezed orange juice - then I could just close my eyes, listen to some music with turquoise waves crashing on the shore and image enjoying a care-free brunch on that balcony...

I have been discovering lots of new beautiful sites today as I am still sick and stuck at home. I love this Scandinavian house filled with nooks and crannies, interesting curves and beautiful decor.

Sea gleaming through the window, flower blooming in the garden, classic and simple decor - everything is so delectable. Notably absent from this home are the kids, which makes the work easier, but nevertheless a house worth dreaming of!

How cute is this Spanish house made for outdoor living. There are covered terraces everywhere with comfy seating areas and most rooms seem to have double French doors leading out to terraces and balconies.

All the decor is also so light and happy, using a lot of natural wood colour similar to oak and pine and there are flowers and plants in every room. Great planning, which here has successfully created a smooth transformation between the indoor and outdoor spaces!

This little cottage is just the sweetest thing, and so is its garden shed, which has been  transformed into an amazing little guest room. It's country chic at its best with vaulted beam ceilings, exposed brick walls, uneven floorboards, white, florals...all those ingredients blended together into a country dream.

The rooms certainly have some contrast to them with thick birch trunks being used as table legs and kitchen having such a mix and match attitude on units. Then again the dining room is a spot of colour-coordinated perfection together with the bedroom. Everything is just so lovable in that cottage!

The sweet English singer Adele has bought herself a little country hideaway. Her Sussex mansion comes with plenty of rooms and 25 acres, as well as a price tag of around $10M (6 million of those British pounds). Well done Adele - this is such a lovely traditional house!

Feeling country and romance and not the least because we are soon heading out for a little countryside trip. Panelled walls and furniture in that worn, old county look just looks so relaxing.

The florals in this living room are not overbearing, just sweet and romantic - and well matching with the flower arrangements around the room. I have to admin, once again, that the most eye-catching accessory in this room is the Union Jack pillow with a funky twist when it comes to colour...

Love and romance is still in the air, especially when looking at this shabby chic French country bathroom. I grew up seeing nothing but the white Scandinavian interiors and muted tones, and by the time I had my first own place I was crying for colour. Now that we have been activating the house hunting mode a bit, I am craving for some white, cream and muted browns again. All I seem to see is okra, yellow, mint green and medium browns - and not only on the walls but also in the ceilings! My mind is crying for some zen-like balance and colour-coordination...

That said, here comes a lovely (detached) city-home filled with light, whites, creams and taupes - even some light grey tomes. I love the look and the feel of the house, although at this point of life with three little kids I could not do light fabrics unless there was a miraculous way to wipe them clean. Looking at dirty hand prints and crayon marks every day would drive me crazy...

Yes, we have visited a few houses again, and as always feel pretty disappointed. Very little garden space, houses like cardboard requiring pretty much being rebuilt, and price tags way too high. This villa is something different though, and it has such an authentic Mediterranean feel.

What is not to love with those patterned floors, high ceilings and beams, large windows and spectacular views. Yet rather than being fascinated by this house, my love is more geared towards the gardens; they areso gorgeous - and there are 28+ acres of them! Too bad that even after the $4M reduction the price still stands around $15...

This period home in Pennsylvania is such a gem! So beautifully restored and just packed with charm and character of real stone and wood beams and floors. Who wouldn't like to have a kitchen that can fit an island larger than 10-person dining table, a gigantic double-cooker and has an abundance of counter top and storage space.

The arched hallway makes me think of an old castle, and the impression is accented by the wide and so natural-looking floor planks. There is beauty both in the structure and the interiors!
