cantilevered balancing barn

By houseofanais · April 21, 2011 · 0 Comments ·

Would you be stay in this Balancing Barn knowing that half of the house is hanging without visible support? Although the drop is small rather than hundreds of feet over a canyon, I still find the idea a bit scary.

The house itself is special for sure. Designed by Dutch architect Winy Maas it is built hanging like many houses in Netherlands are over the water due to lack of space. The structure looks a bit like a barn, but a very special one as this one has a metallic exterior. The location is also nice - surrounding by green rolling pastures and the sea being nearby.

Balancing barn belongs to Living Architecture - an organisation which supports modern architecture and can be rented out. They also have other modern rental properties scattered around England.

Hmm I've never seen a house hanging over the water here (Netherlands) :P

I've never been, but I'll take your word for it!

I found some images of beautiful cantilevered houses, one in particular designed by Piet Blom. Another interesting design direction are the amphibious, floating houses. I think I'll put something together on my findings - there are some very interesting modern houses in Netherlands!
